Super Mario 63 is a fan-game, mainly inspired by Nintendo's Super Mario 64, but also by Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Many levels and features are based upon them and other Nintendo's games, but a variety of them are completely original. Among them include a detailed storyline, shareable codes, three different F.L.U.D.D. power-ups, four different power-up stars, with 64 Shine Sprites and 64 Star Coins to collect.

Super Mario 63 can be found on Newgrounds and Runouw's own site, but please note that most, if not all, of the secondary hosts out there never got the May 2012 Update (with Thwomps and Flamethrowers being added to the Level Designer).

Information[]

Story[]

It's a peaceful day in the Mushroom Kingdom, as Princess Peach plans a surprise party for Mario. Everyone is gathered outside the front of the castle for the event. Some Toads rush around with preparations, as Mario is already on his way to the castle at Peach's invitation. Other Toads relax and chat, debating which of Mario's many achievements should be most celebrated. Unfortunately, high above, Bowser approaches in his massive airship, and rushed activity of another kind prepares Bowser's army for a new invasion.

Meanwhile, Mario cheerily makes his way to the castle, making excellent time, and starts reviewing all of his skills (tutorial level). Proving to himself that he's still got it, he approaches Peach's Castle at top speed. One Toad comments that Mario isn't due for another 30 minutes before dashing off... Just as Mario arrives, thoroughly surprising another group of Toads nearby. However, the pleasant surprise is short lived as Bowser swoops in and begins his attack.

At first, Mario easily holds his own against rounds of enemies thrown at him, as the magical protections of the castle also deflect the beginning of the attack. However, the assault is relentless, and Peach, who is vulnerably outside, is quickly cornered by Bowser. A loyal Toad is roasted by Bowser's flame breath while protecting the princess, and proves to be not nearly protective enough. With the princess in custody, Bowser commands his right hand man, the great Magikoopa known as Kamek, to take Mario out. Mario is unfortunately distracted just long enough by Peach's capture for a blast from Kamek to knock him back, and a swift spell from Kamek makes sure the plucky plumber stays down for a while.

Inside the castle, Bowser and Kamek go to the Shine Sprite Orb, taking a moment to gloat over their victory. All the Toads that survived have gone into hiding, and the castle is deserted. Bowser orders Kamek to destroy the Shine Sprite Orb, and a single blast shatters it, releasing all the shine Sprites inside, completely eliminating the magical protections around the castle, and plunging the entire Mushroom Kingdom into darkness. Bowser locks the castle down, and begins a mysterious search.

Outside, Mario hears a voice calling to him. It's a Toad, Eddie, the last remaining Toad in the area. Mario groggily wakes up as Eddie explains the situation. Something catches Mario's eye, though, as he quickly spots a Shine Sprite sitting just outside the castle. As Mario snatches it up, Eddie realizes that if this Shine Sprite could be recovered, there is still hope for rescuing the kingdom. Eddie leads Mario inside the castle to the Shine Sprite Orb room, and with the power of the single rescued Shine, Eddie creates a new Shine Sprite Orb.

With one last tip from Eddie about an unlocked door he saw in the main entry of the castle, the race is on to recover the Shine Sprites and rescue Princess Peach...

History[]

Development of Super Mario 63 started in early 2006. The first Super Mario fan-game made by Runouw was released in 2006, by the name of Super Mario Sunshine 64, the game had many bugs and was generally incomplete, so Runouw decided to develop a new fan-game, with the name Super Mario Sunshine 128.

At some point during 2006-2007, Super Mario Sunshine 128 was confirmed to be a full game. During the development phase, the total amount of Shine Sprites and Star Coins was set to 64 Shine Sprites and 63 Star Coins (according to a rumour), but this was eventually changed in Super Mario 63 v1.1, when the final amount of Shines Sprites and Star Coins was set to 64 each.

In 2008, the game was renamed to Super Mario 63 and the first demo of the game was released on SheezyArt, the game was well received, so development continued.

In 2009 the full game was released on both SheezyArt and Newgrounds, in the following years, the game went through several upgrades, including several improvements to the Level Database, culminating in the Hybrid Flash and Forum Interface used today. There have also been tweaks to the available content in the Level Designer, in particular after the final May 2012 Update of the game which added Thwomps and Flamethrowers.

The game has received great reviews on all portals, even becoming one of the most popular Super Mario fan-games, nowadays, there are currently two projects in development in regards to Super Mario 63, these projects are being made by fans of the original game with the approval of Runouw, Super Mario 63 Redux, a remake of the original Runouw game and Super Mario 127, a sequel to the original game.

It should be noted that this early version of the game would introduce the scrapped zone from The Edge of the Mushroom Kingdom, where there were two Shine Sprites instead of one, and the two Shine Sprites appeared to have the same IDs as Island in the Sky from Bob-omb Battlefield.[0]
The file select music does not have a replay loop, meaning that this is the only version where you can hear it in its entirety. It is also noticeably higher quality when compared to the later versions, though the intro portion of this music would be slightly lower quality in 1.4.
Max Shine Sprites: 4

In theory, this version was planned to have a of maximum 5 Shine Sprites to collect instead of 4, because The Secret of the Mountain shares the same Shine Sprite ID with Island in the Sky.

The cannon outside the castle is available from the start, because the cannon lids were not implemented yet.
There is a mountain at the far right of the Castle Grounds, it is impossible to climb it normally. When playing this version in the website (not possible anymore due to Adobe Flash Player's end of life), the Changing Tab Trick can be used to clip in and teleport to the top of the mountain to stand on it. When going too far to the right, Mario will seemingly fall forever, because the trigger for losing a life is not placed out of bounds.
F.L.U.D.D. can be used by holding the space bar, or holding the left-click button.
Goombas and Bob-ombs do not give coins when defeated.
The Triple Jump move cannot be done when Mario has F.L.U.D.D. equipped. It is only possible to do the Triple Jump when Mario does not have F.L.U.D.D. equipped.
Shine Sprites do not shine.
"Level1" is a level mean´t to be showcase demo level (just like Super Mario Sunshine 64 Demo levels), but since Runouw never made a demo version, it got unused and hidden. This level has 2 Shine Sprites, respectively ID=1 (shine sprite above the cloud) and ID=2 (red coin), those ID´s were reutilized for "King Bomb-Omb on the Summit" and "Island In the Sky".

Max Star Coins: 22*

Note that Snowman's Land and Tall Tall Mountain doesn't feature any shine sprites or star coins, also there is a possibility that there is no star coin in the level designer room.

Level Designer Room updated it´s background, and added a new section, where the Shine Sprite Orb is located, on the top of the room, although the room is still rectangular.
Whomp's Fortress Painting. (The Whomp's Fortress Painting, actually leads you, to Shifting Sand Land, which in this version, is incomplete. It is implied, that Whomp's Fortress, was planned to be featured, in Super Mario Sunshine 128/Super Mario 63, but it was eventually scrapped. However no assets for this level are found in any versions.)
There are no wooden platforms in the F.L.U.D.D. room
The windows in the main hall of Peach's Castle, now have a properly transparent background behind them
The Door Frame 2 in the Main Hall of Peach's Castle that leads to the Level Designer room was changed to a Big Star Door
More changes to various levels
There are no instructions for the pause button

in the controls menu

The file select menu is changed, and has four delete buttons (DELETE A, DELETE B, DELETE C and DELETE D) instead of just a single DELETE button
The old water percentage bar is replaced by a new water percentage bar in which it is located in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and there is text in blue saying "WATER" on top of it. The old water percentage bar wasn't completely replaced, however, it can still be seen in the pause menu.
The HUD is changed, which is notable for the Shine Sprite counter being in the top-left corner of the screen
Haze Maze Cave is now complete.
This is the last version having the old loading screen
Now there´s a secret passageway above the basement, that features Twhomp´s Castle and Frosty Fludd´s hidden entrances, it also features a secret passageway to the Whomp´s Fortress Painting room.
Updated "Upper Hallway" room design
Updated "Time Trials" room design (later known as Kamek´s Castle room)
Star Limits are present, but hidden and deactivated, to activate it, change the game´s script "CheatCastleUnlock" from true to false, By doing that, now the castle is fully locked, all doors, and even the secret passageways to the basement and fludd room, it´s fully functional, besides there´s not a Bowser laugh by trying to acess a locked room (for some reason the game don´t play the audio, despite being in game´s files), and the game also locks the Endless Stairs(by turning them into "Endless Mode", and other rooms by don´t having the minimum required shine sprites to progress, probably the reason for being deactivated.

Sling Stars
Silver Stars
Tall, Tall Mountain (Complete, but is missing The Secret of the Mountainside's Shine Sprite.)
The ability to run was added, which can be done by quickly pressing the left or right keys twice.
This is the last version without a separate air meter, as the health meter is acting like the air meter in Super Mario 64.
A Sheezyart changelog with some modifications
Instructions for the pause button in the controls menu
Windswept Hills, a Castle Secret Course (later named as "Secret of The Sky"
Tidal Isles (incomplete, and hidden in game´s files in a beta state).

Max Shine Sprites: 32

Max Star Coins: 29

In theory, this version was planned to have 32 Shine Sprites instead of 31, because the first Shine Sprite of Bob-omb Battlefield, Battle with King Bob-omb, shares the same ID with The Five Silver Stars. But we can get that shine sprite by CTRL <- in the orb intro and CTRL <- once again to spawn Mario in "Level1" a showcase level mean´t for a demo version (just like Super Mario Sunshine 64 Demo), but since Runouw never made a demo version, it got unused and hidden. All 2 Shine Sprites there have ID=1 (shine sprite above the cloud) and ID=2 (red coin), those ID´s were reutilized for "King Bomb-Omb on the Summit" and "Island In the Sky" respectively.

This is the final version of Super Mario Sunshine 128, prior to its rename. The game is now using Flash 8 as well.
The intro cutscene when creating a new file was changed
The Whomp's Fortress painting is replaced by the Shifting Sand Land painting, and Shifting Sand Land, is incomplete. The Whomp's Fortress Painting, could be seen in Version 1.3. It is implied, that Whomp's Fortress was planned, to be featured in Super Mario Sunshine 128/Super Mario 63, but it was later scrapped. The versions of the game, that show the Whomp's Fortress Painting, are unknown.
The space bar is for the spin attack, the up arrow key [↑] is for reading signs, and holding the up arrow key [↑] allows for repeated jumping
Remade pause menu
Changed red coins to a new design.
The King Bob-omb battle music is Run! Run... Run!!!!
The 24 Shine Sprites "Another room" message is mentioned as "Time Trials", do note that Time Trials refers to two levels from Super Mario Sunshine 64 in which you have a limited amount of time to reach a Shine Sprite. Time Trials was originally going to make a return in Super Mario Sunshine 128, but eventually it got removed, as it was getting replaced by Kamek's Castle.

Tidal Isles' secret Shine Sprite (now complete) which can be accessed in the room without a painting by entering an invisible pipe
Quality HUD element in the bottom-left corner of the screen
Controls sign
A short cutscene was added when Mario/Luigi loses a life, which shows Mario's/Luigi's lives counter exploding.
This is the first version with a separate air meter next to the health meter.
An animation where an already-collected Shine Sprite turns to blue

Max Shine Sprites: 43 + Tidal Isles Shine Sprite

Max Star Coins: 29

The cutscene where Mario arrives at the Castle Grounds is removed.
The game now has Shine limits, meaning that Mario/Luigi must have a required amount of Shine Sprites/Star Coins, or a key, to unlock a door. The game already had shine limits since version 1.3 from Super Mario Sunshine 128. But by including star limits, the game can´t remove the "Endless mode" for the Endless Stairs room, despite unlocking the 40 star door, the game was never programmed to remove the Endless Stairs trigger, turning Bowser´s Castle inacessible, to bypass this you can use the Change Tab Trick (now impossible) to clip to the top of the room, shown here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl9dhUJR-NE
But there's a more simple way to bypass this, by changing the game's script "CheatCastleUnlock" from false to true (this removes locked paths and star limits.)

Super Mario Sunshine 128's secret test level was removed from the unused cutscene, but it's still present in this version's files.
Bowser's Castle has a few changes from the last version. At the end, of the endless stairs, you will jump into a hole. You will go to a room, where you will use a sling star, to go to Bowser's Castle.
The red coin counter in the top-right corner of the screen only shows when Mario/Luigi collects a red coin.
The Info text in the pause menu had its position changed
The red coin's image counter is changed to its finalized design
The water percentage bar was updated to its finalized design, which now shows a small red bar that shows how much time Mario/Luigi can spend when using F.L.U.D.D.
The Secret of the Mountain and Battle With King Bob-omb's descriptions were changed
The King Bob-omb battle music is Boss Battle
Various changes to various levels
The old Lethal Lava Land music is removed, and replaced by the "Melty Molten Galaxy" Theme, from Super Mario Galaxy. But, in this version, the old Lethal Lava Land Music, can still be heard, in Shifting Sand Land.
This is the last version, which uses the old Castle Main Hall. The New Main Hall can be seen, below the old Main Hall, in this version, as well as in Super Mario Sunshine 128's Versions 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5. In all these versions, you can access the New Main Hall, by using the Changing Tab Trick (No longer possible). You can still see the New Main Hall, by staying in the old Main Hall, and leaving the game, for too long, and thus falling out of bounds. But, you will only see the New Main Hall, and not walk in it, because you are falling out of bounds. The New Main Hall, can be seen, towards the end of this video, shown here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl9dhUJR-NE

Background qualities were changed
The Boo's Mansion painting was changed to its finalized design
The 24 Shine Sprites "Another room" message is mentioned as "Battle room," but that room, only has two white paintings, which are inaccessible.
Mentions with "Bomb-omb" are corrected to "Bob-omb"

Max Star Coins: 49

"The Secret of The Fortress shine sprite has ID=2 (Island in the Sky), making this shine infortunately impossible to get normally, but we can avoid this by changing the game´s script, specially the shine sprite´s script, changing the "starnum" value from "2" to "25".
The Game Over screen is removed, but it is still possible to access this room via the Macromedia Flash Player Control exploit.
Peach's Castle, has a new Main Hall, similar to the Main Hall, in Super Mario 64. The Old Main Hall was moved out of bounds. This video shows it.

https://youtu.be/uYAEk0blLYI

The water percentage bar only shows when Mario/Luigi has F.L.U.D.D. equipped.
More changes to various levels
The old Shifting Sand Land music is now removed and replaced by an arrangement of the Gritzy Desert theme from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, which originates from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
This version features a Shine Sprite that's impossible to collect, called 5 Silver Stars in the Shallows and Sky from Wet-Dry World. Surprisingly enough, this Shine Sprite has its own ID. Because this version was released with only three Silver Stars in the level, it is impossible to collect the Shine Sprite normally, but it is possible to use the Macromedia Flash Player 8 Control exploit to collect it, which is only possible when running this version off of the computer.
In theory, this version was planned to have 54 Shine Sprites instead of 53 because The Secret of the Fortress from Lethal Lava Land has the same Shine Sprite ID with Island in the Sky from Bob-omb Battlefield.
When collecting a Shine Sprite, Mario/Luigi now spawns at the painting where he jumped in, or in the Main Hall of Peach's Castle, in case of the secret Shine Sprites.

Super Mario 63 (v1.2) 2009-06-09
A brand new introduction when creating a new save file, which contains a long scrolling text wall with animated images. This introduction states that the Mushroom Kingdom is stated to have been ruled by tyrants in ancient history, who used magic to commit war crimes against political dissidents. An unnamed "ancient hero" was able to defeat the tyrants and locked all of their magic into an orb called the Orb of Power. The subsequent and current ruling dynasty, the Toadstools, guard the Orb of Power deep within the kingdom's castle from potential abusers. To do this, they used the power of the Shine Sprites, magical devices that they stored in the Shine Sprite Orb, in the room containing the stained glass mosaic of Princess Peach, the current ruler of the kingdom. Over the long history of the Toadstool Dynasty, the location of the Orb of Power was eventually forgotten, and eventually, its existence. No one, not even the current ruler, Princess Peach, is aware of its existence, except for one person (Bowser), who is not revealed during the introduction. This long introduction was removed in the next version.[1]
More secret Shine Sprites
The Level Designer, which can be unlocked by collecting five Star Coins in any save file.
Bowser's airship cutscene after finishing Mushroom Kingdom (Tutorial)
The Edge of the Mushroom Kingdom
A new shortcut to Bowser's First Trap at the right side of the Hall Staircase

This is the first version with all 64 Shine Sprites and Star Coins.
This version does not feature the C-H-E-A-T code in the main menu. It was added in the next version.
This is the first version with a functional final boss.
The consistent font type is Arial for numeric indicators at the top of the screen.[2]
Dire, Dire Docks is renamed as Jolly Roger Bay, and the second section of the level got moved to another secret Shine Sprite: The Cave of Enpuzzlement and adding a new section to Jolly Roger Bay, which means that Dire, Dire Docks was divided in two new secret Shine Sprites.
Unlocking Luigi requires 32 Star Coins. The "[M] [L]" selector in the file select menu has been moved upwards out of the canvas, making it normally invisible.
The title screen music was shortened.
Removal of the Floater Land (Underwater) music, which plays when touching water while the normal Floater Land music plays.
The Shine Sprite in Peach's Garden right to the Backyard is green instead of purple when revisited after the Shine Sprite is already collected. If uncollected, it is green.
The redundant centered door in the F.L.U.D.D. room was removed, but not completely. It was actually moved out of bounds.
Redesigned pause menu; the Controls menu (which was a feature in the previous versions that allowed players to switch between keyboard controls and mouse controls) was removed.[3]
The Sling Star outside the castle and the four power-up stars on the castle roof were removed.
The poisonous liquid in the toxic maze is yellow (like in the original Super Mario 64) instead of purple (like in Super Mario 64 DS).
This version is known as the Complete version on SheezyArt.
Cave of Impuzzlement changed to another shine sprite sector, and Jolly Roger Bay remained as is (in Dire Dire Docks), Cave of Impuzzlement has the same ID as The Great Carpet Chase (never used Castle Secret Star hidden in game´s files)
