Super Mario 63 is a fan-game inspired by Nintendo's Super Mario 64. Many levels and features are based upon it and other of Nintendo's games, but a variety of them are completely original. Among them include a detailed storyline, ability to play as Mario or Luigi (Luigi as an unlockable, late in the game), a highly customizable Level Designer with shareable codes, three different F.L.U.D.D Power-ups, four different power-caps, and 64 Shine Sprites & 64 Star Coins to collect.

SM63 is the game that earned Runouw the majority of his early recognition. It is written in Flash, and has been submitted to the major portals, though a recent Cease & Desist from Nintendo has caused it to be removed from them. However, various versions are still available from secondary sources, as well as Runouw's own website. Please note that most, if not all, of the secondary hosts out there never got the May 2012 update (with Thwomps and Flame Throwers), since the C&D came soon after, and it was not uploaded to Newgrounds.

Around January 2015, the C&D abruptly ended and SM63 was back on Newgrounds, without Runouw himself nor any of the active forum members noticing, until Asterocrat randomly stumbled across it and told it, confirming that the Newgrounds version also got the Thwomps/Flamethrowers update.

Story

It's a peaceful day in the Mushroom Kingdom, as Princess Peach plans a surprise party for Mario. Everyone is gathered outside the front of the castle for the event. Some Toads rush around with preparations, as Mario is already on his way to the castle at Peach's invitation. Other Toads relax and chat, debating which of Mario's many achievements should be most celebrated. Unfortunately, high above, King Bowser approaches in his massive airship, and rushed activity of another kind prepares Bowser's army for a new invasion.

Meanwhile, Mario cheerily makes his way to the castle, making excellent time, and starts reviewing all of his skills (tutorial level). Proving to himself that he's still got it, he approaches Peach's Castle at top speed. One Toad comments that Mario isn't due for another 30 minutes before dashing off... just as Mario arrives, thoroughly surprising another group of Toads nearby. However, the pleasant surprise is short lived as Bowser swoops in and begins his attack.

At first, Mario easily holds his own against rounds of enemies thrown at him, as the magical protections of the castle also deflect the beginning of the attack. However, the assault is relentless, and Peach, who is vulnerably outside, is quickly cornered by Bowser. A loyal Toad is roasted by Bowser's flame breath while protecting the Princess, and proves to be not nearly protection enough. With the Princess in custody, Bowser commands his right hand man, the great magikoopa Kamek, to take Mario out. Mario is unfortunately distracted just long enough by Peach's capture for a blast from Kamek to knock him back, and a swift sleeping spell from Kamek makes sure the plucky plumber stays down for a while.

Inside the castle, Bowser and Kamek go to the Shine Sprite Orb, taking a moment to gloat over their victory. All the Toads that survived have gone into hiding, and the castle is deserted. Bowser orders Kamek to destroy the Shine Sprite Orb, and a single blast shatters it, releasing all the shine Sprites inside, completely eliminating the magical protections around the castle, and plunging the entire Mushroom Kingdom into darkness. Bowser locks the castle down, and begins a mysterious search.

Outside, Mario hears a voice calling to him in his sleep. It's a Toad, Eddie, the last remaining Toad in the area. Mario groggily wakes up as Eddie explains the situation. Something catches Mario's eye, though, as he quickly spots a Shine Sprite sitting just outside the castle. As Mario snatches it up, Eddie realizes that if this Shine Sprite could be recovered, there is still hope for rescuing the kingdom. Eddie leads Mario inside the castle to the Shine Sprite Orb room, and with the power of the single rescued Shine, Eddie creates a new Shine Sprite Orb.

With one last tip from Eddie about an unlocked door he saw in the main entry of the castle, the race is on to recover the Shine Sprites and rescue Princess Peach...

History

Originally released as a demo on a number of sites, the full version was released in 2009 to SheezyArt and Newgrounds. The game was well received, and the original community quickly outgrew its free site and was moved to its current location at Runouw.com. The game has gone through several upgrades over the years, including several improvements on the Level Database, culminating in the hybrid flash and forum interface used today. There have also been tweaks to the available content in the Level Designer, including the May 2012 Update of Thwomps and Flame Throwers.
